Quicksync transcoding looks pretty damn good and doesn't stress the processor at all, so you could get by with something low-end. Going with your own setup would allow you to drop in an Intel chip, which would enable you to allow GPU (Quicksync) transcoding. Honestly, another option would be look into OpenMediaVault with SnapRAID + UnionFS (this guy's videos are awesome). watching on a phone, sharing with friends, etc) than the Synology's processor won't be able to keep up. If you're only going to be Direct Playing/Streaming files, then setting up Plex Media Server on the Synology would be fine. My personal setup has a file server (like your proposed Synology), a processor (for me, an i-3 9xxx series) and then the various players (ATV, phones, etc). To be honest, I didn't find it made a difference, the presets work well for me:ĭVD Rip Quality on Plex/Roku Ultra - General / General Discussions - Plex ForumĮssentially, yes- that's the flow of things. This guide is nearly 5 years old but does pretty good with explaining some of the finite settings if you really want to learn them. Squeezing 10% out of my file size library versus hours and hours of trial and error to find the best mix for every type of movie isn't fun for me. I'm just trying to get rid of discs and making the experience better for my family. But, I'm still making HUGE gains over MPEG2 and the filtering helps with the quality, and while I kind of enjoy ripping movies and re-encoding, I don't want to make a hobby out of it. If I did a ton of tuning, could I squeeze out a smaller file size? Sure. The latest versions of Handbrake seems to automate everything else very well. I did find the x264 Encoder Tune for Animation does help with some of the older kids stuff. Honestly, I just choose the stock Super HQ 1080p preset and then change the framerate to Same As Source. If it's a superior format, however, perhaps it would be worth it to sacrifice quality by increasing the RF value or the Encoder Preset slider? Lastly, should I aim for H.265? I tried it overnight, but it took 6 hours for a single 18gb movie, and that times 300 will leave me without a usable computer for the foreseeable future. ![]() I have an 8tb harddrive, and I'm likely to buy another one when I can afford it. While I'm at it, what's the difference between H.264 and H.264 10-bit? Which should I choose?įor reference, I don't need it compressed much, decreasing the files by as much as a third would help tremendously. I put everything on auto or none, as you can see, is that correct for no interference with the picture itself? There was also some advanced options written out that I kinda just deleted lol, should I not have? So I'm trying to understand handbrake, and I think I got most of the settings down (essentially turn off all filter and dimension settings, audio and subs on straight passthru), but I'm still confused on these settings.
